Track Name: Into the Lake
tilting up the edges of the lake at night
softened heat, buzzing like a beetle
empty shoes and ozone

glowing in the ashes of my stake in life
pebble sparks, scattered shells and beer cans
empty cars and engines

feel the waters wrap around my dirty feet
blinking coast, stretched out like a necklace
rolling clouds and engines

every piece of seaglass is a jewel to me
emerald green, imported beer and heartache
softened waves and decades

washing off the burrs that catch inside of me
quiet thoughts, filtered in the moonlight
floating hair and pollen

into the lake
Track Name: My Dogs
Abbey now the dirt makes up most all of you
in the long brown grasses my first friend is new

Phoebe was a golden on my side of town
slept on Phoebe's stomach in the neighbor's lawn
i would toss her tennis balls into the lake
turn in cringin' laughter at her dryin' shake

my dogs

Tosha took to thunder like a ghost was there
she could feel storms coming in her static hair
though she passed away while i was gone to school
i could see her ashes helped the flowers bloom
Track Name: Time Breathes Away / Flatten to Lace
time breathes away

88 days of a fall with no sun
i could burn up the leaves until easter would come
eat up the sound of a stereo's hum
in my fingers a brain like a puzzle undone
carry round zeros to make up a one
88 keys at my grandfather's place
in a windowless cellar of yellowing space
making up songs for the furnace's face
i could flatten the wrinkles to intricate lace
Track Name: Little Friend
wish I could cleanse the hollows of ink streaming in his blood
even a kid'll burrow and shrink from the touch of love

and on the shores he forged an island in the clay
set on the silver cold embraces of lake champlain

how could i say
that the wind won't blow away

this little friend of mine
make trouble
it'll all turn out fine
burn your skin
leak your blood
of its inky black lining
this little friend of mine
cause trouble
it'll all turn out fine
burn your skin
bleed your blood
of its sickly black lining

i heard he capsized in some big zephyr of early fall
i took some comfort in knowing i never knew him at all

how would you say
that the storm won't blow away

this little friend of mine
make trouble
it'll all turn out fine
burn your skin
leak your blood
of its inky black lining
this little friend of mine
cause trouble
it'll all turn out fine
burn your skin
bleed your blood
of its sickly black lining
Track Name: A Seagull's Heart
Under the watery rays of the satellite glow
i practice breathing and turn up at all my friends' shows
i make a bucket of rice that'll last me for days
i'd take up shaving but i'm saving money on blades

never make it too far
with a seagull's heart

the wrong words are spoken
i'm burnt out on jokin'

and in the logic of dreams i can still feel the tides
the only water i hear now is in vertical pipes
it's just a carrion nest with no tree to rest on
where i can shake off the jangle of creatural songs

never make it too far
with a seagull's heart

the wrong words are spoken
i'm burnt out on jokin'
Track Name: This Bug's Life
into the friday night swarm of the mayflies
i shudder like a wing
i flap a simple, cool breeze and they take flight
into the big city ringin'
what good is spring if you hunger the spiders
into the stomach singin'

too old
to save a new life

under the cold stale light of the street lamp
i fold in like a moth
and in my lonely drawers of devotion
i make my holy cloth
i'll find the brightest sill to leave my wings on
when can i take them off?

to old
to save a new life
Track Name: Copper Green
finger through the webs that gather on my resting eyes
turning to the sky the empty bowl i keep inside
all day long

sifting through the seeds that never made it in the dark
speaking to a fern who always needed me to talk
all night long

only keep the freshest, reddest skin
put away the pictures that she's in
tunnel in the tendrils of my kin
sleep off all the dreamers that i've been

green is the copper of a well-adjusted man
keeping all his brightest tokens hidden in his hands
Track Name: Atlas Blue
easy now
float on the air in your body
the nibble of a minnow
leave your goosebumps behind me
throwing rocks at the driftwood
making its way in from Essex
before i leave here for good
my blood will fill these insects

the wrong words
are spoken
by me

easy now
breathe in the mouth of your sadness
there are still stones to throw
in the blue of this infinite atlas
we're cradled in the basin
of some big glacial scar
i can only hear the geese above
and the splashing of our hearts
as you and i saturate
like colors on some old record sleeve
my brain too soggy to remember
why i ever decided to leave
